It's time to roll up your sleeves and get started!

Launching a PR program can seem daunting.

It doesn't need to be. Think of it like climbing a mountain-would you just charge ahead and try to run up the mountain?

Of course not.

First, you would do some research.

You would most likely:

Study the terrain of the mountain to determine what types of tools would be needed. Where might you find them? Which types and brands are best?

Review maps of the mountain and plot your course

Consult the weather to make sure no large storms are looming

Much like climbing a mountain, before you go racing ahead with a PR plan, take some time in the beginning to do a little research and put your plan together.

Before jumping in, review your present situation

  • Is this your first foray into the public eye?
  • If you've had previous media efforts what has worked and what hasn't?
  • Were there any story ideas you pitched that yielded positive results?
  • Have you already developed relationships with reporters?

Think back to any previous successes and identify what you want to repeat.

As you put your plan together consider:

  • How frequently do you need to be in the public eye? More or less than in the past? Are there any obstacles in the way?
  • Do you know your story? What exactly do you wish to communicate? Who is your target audience?
  • What exactly is your goal? Are you trying to establish your brand? Grow your business? Introduce a new product or service? Support your sales team?

Work through these questions, with answers in hand you're ready to start building your PR plan.
