Sweet But Twisted - Fun Facts About Candy Canes

Starting around late November – early December candy canes pop up everywhere. They can be seen in stores, on trees, handed out in retail stores, used for decorations…

The origin of the candy cane isn’t exactly clear.

Some say the candy cane was invented in Germany over 250 years ago. The legend says at the time, the white “sugar sticks” were created to keep children quiet in church.

The stripe and hook in the candy showed up in the early 1900s and the look and shape have remained for the classic candy cane. Today you can get candy canes in almost every size shape and color imaginable!

More fun facts about candy canes:

  • 1.8 billion candy canes are made each year
  • The largest candy cane was made in 2012 and was 51 feet long
  • Candy canes are often used as crunchy toppings for ice cream and other desserts and are often added to hot beverages like cocoa or coffee to add peppermint flavor
  • Close to 2 billion candy canes are sold each year in the 4 weeks prior to Christmas and Hanukkah

Ever wondered how they’re made? The Martinsville Candy Kitchen in Martinsville, Indiana makes between 400-600 candy canes each night during the holiday season. Last year they made almost 30,000 candy canes. Perhaps most impressive is that all their candy canes are made by hand!

Classic peppermint candy canes continue to be the best sellers, but today many other flavors can be found. Many candy makers from Jolly Rancher to Starbust have created their own versions. Here are just a few of the more "unusual" flavors that can be found:
